My Story: Brian Drapeau, a high school senior

I was 5 years old when I first played baseball, and since then I couldn’t get enough. In high school, my friends nicknamed me “The Bull.” I pitched, hit, won all-county honors and made all star teams. And, I can’t imagine stopping now.

The Real Secret to College Recruiting

I thought it would be simple to land a spot on a college team. If you were a talented player, knew the game, had solid grades and kept a great work ethic, you would go to a camp, make an immediate impact and get an offer to play baseball. But, it’s not that simple. There’s a lot of competition for a spot on a team, and especially for scholarships.

A Team on My Side

I found my “X-Factor” with Hans Hanson. Coaches respect his opinion and that gave me an edge. That was, in my opinion, key to getting recruited. Mr. Hanson was straightforward with me about my talent, and he was very encouraging. He taught me how to build value in me, how to position myself for success. He explained the recruiting process and gave me suggestions to send updated videos to coaches, urged me to call them directly and to talk to them weekly.

This advice made all the difference for me. But it’s not just about sports. I intend to become a surgeon, so a solid education has always been first and foremost. I needed a school with a good reputation, great biology program and, of course, a solid baseball team. It was very important for me to know that my coaches wanted me as a player too. College baseball gives me an opportunity to play the game I love for four more years, and something more.

A Plan to Excel

I believe I will excel by learning to balance academics with the rigorous schedule of a college athlete—becoming part of a brotherhood and team. For me, my move to the next level began when Coach Giaquinto offered me a spot on the Sacred Heart University baseball team. I wake up every day and relive that moment, because I know I can keep playing a game I love. I know that my future is very bright.
