Parents, Know Your Place During a Coach’s Meeting

Parents have a specific role to carry out during a campus visit and coaches meeting. For starters, they are to make sure their arrival is early. Yes, get to campus early. Identify the location of the Athletic department. Travel around the campus and find the sports facilities and fields. Then head back to meet the coach.

During the meeting, sit back slightly from your son or daughter. Keep the meeting centered around the coach and your student-athlete. Watch their interaction. Keep a few questions close in hand to ask if you need to keep the discussion flowing.

Upon leaving, walk behind the coach and your child if they walk out together. Give them their full opportunity to get to know each other. For the end of the meeting, be sure not to overly discuss your feelings with the coach, just play it out quietly in supporting the best interests of your student-athlete.

Once you are together alone with your son or daughter, be careful not to attempt to influence them with your feelings, which may be running strong. You have but one question to ask- “Could you see yourself there?” Then, get heading towards your next campus visit and coaches meeting.
